Black businesses thrive when opportunity is fair.

The Black Business Task Force advocates to unite, empower, and grow DC Black-Owned businesses.

Our Organization’s Approach

We can do more together than we can alone.

Welcome to the Washington D.C. Black Business Task Force. Our mission is to build a better tomorrow, today by driving equity and new opportunities for black businesses and contractors. We ask that you join our team of black businesses, industry leaders, and frontline activists; to engage in the District’s Disparity Study, take action to protect and preserve black wealth, and combat institutionalized social constructs prohibiting economic equity.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate with hundreds of other like-minded advocates educating the black community to engage in the District’s Disparity Study’s vision and implementation. In addition, you can donate to the DC Taskforce to support our efforts to bring awareness to the District’s Disparity Study and actively rewrite an economic narrative impacting generations to come.

WHAT IS THE DISPARITY STUDY?

Creating a movement to ignite policy change

For decades, Washington D.C. has been a city of two worlds. Nearly 50% of the population is black, yet there are many questions surrounding government spending with black-owned businesses and the long-time battle for a fair playing field.

This study aims to uncover the economic imbalance and ever-widening equity gap accelerating the displacement of black business communities; while identifying solutions for a better path forward.

The Hard Truth

From the early 1900s into the 1950s, African-Americans—subject to Jim Crow laws in other parts of the District— were forced to create a “city within a city” on historic U Street, with their own businesses, intellectual, and cultural life.

The average annual revenue of Black-owned businesses is less than 15 percent than that of other ethnicities.

Black-owned businesses receive around 10 percent of the total sale revenue in the District, while other majority groups receive over 80 percent

Black-owned businesses make up less than 14 percent of total businesses, although Black residents make up 45 percent of the population
