About the Task Force

OUR VISION

Advocating to Unite, Empower, and Grow D.C. Black-Owned & Black-Led Business

We aim to be the premier community advocates and educators spearheading the advancement of equal economic opportunity and revenue for black-owned businesses; while informing them about the Disparity Study and the positive impact it will have on them, their communities, and families.

Our Reason to be

A History of Black Business in D.C.

  • Late 1800s

The U Street corridor emerges as Black Broadway, the center of African-American business, culture, and social change.

  • 1920

There more than 300 thriving black businesses on U Street.

  • 1968

The riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King mark the beginning of the economic decline of U Street.

  • 1978

Newly elected Mayor Marion Barry creates the Minority Business Opportunity Commission (MBOC) and developed a law that required 25 percent certified minority participation in District government contracts.

  • 1986

The Frank D. Reeves Municipal Center was built at 14th and U Streets as an anchor of economic redevelopment for the neighborhood.

  • 2018

While nearly 30% of all businesses in the District are Black-owned, they bring in close to the least amount of revenue when compared to other ethnic groups
